Back to Reality: How to Reset Your Routine After the Summer Holidays

Mums and Dads, we did it! We’ve survived the whirlwind of the summer holidays, filled with fun, laughter, and countless memories. But now it’s time to reset and get back to reality. If you’re like many parents, you may have found that your own health and fitness took a backseat during those busy weeks.

Over the past month, I reached out to our Instagram followers to see what challenges they face as the kids head back to school. The responses boiled down to three main areas: Time, Discipline, and Motivation. Here are my five tips to help you regain control of your routine!

Time: Your Most Precious Resource

Time can often feel like it’s slipping through our fingers. Between school runs, work commitments, endless extracurricular activities, and everyday life, it’s a constant juggling act.

So how do we tackle this? Diarise!

Having a million tasks swirling in your head is a recipe for chaos. Instead, use your phone or a family calendar to block out every action throughout your day. I personally like to book my gym sessions a month in advance. Once it’s in the calendar, it’s much harder to make excuses!

Of course, life happens. You might receive a text saying, “You need to pick Fearne up from school; she’s not feeling well. When these unexpected moments arise, don’t beat yourself up—just roll with it and adapt.

Discipline: Track Your Progress

Staying disciplined can be tricky, but tracking your progress can be a powerful motivator. When you see yourself improving, it gives you that extra boost to keep going.

Set achievable goals. Whether you want to run a 5K or tackle a triathlon.

But let’s look at something simple. A daily target of 10,000 steps is a fantastic place to begin. Break your goals down into smaller, manageable targets to hold yourself accountable every day.

Motivation: Find Your Support System

Let’s face it: staying motivated is often one of the toughest challenges. You might start strong, but a couple of missed sessions can set you back to square one.

That’s where an accountability buddy comes in! Training with a friend or joining a group of like-minded individuals can be a game-changer. When someone else is relying on you, it’s much easier to push through those days when you’re lacking motivation. Plus, let’s be honest—it’s way more fun to work out with a friend!

Nutrition: Make Healthy Choices Easy

Nutrition plays a crucial role in your fitness journey, but when life gets hectic, it’s tempting to grab something quick and easy. So how do you stay accountable while saving time?

Batch cooking is the answer! Choose a day each week to prepare healthy family favorites in bulk. This way, you’ll have nutritious meals ready to go when you need them most.

A Win-Win for the Whole Family

As I always say, “Where there’s a will, there’s a way!” Let’s kill two birds with one stone: get the kids involved! Take them out for a run or a walk while they scoot alongside you. Make it a fun family race! (Trust me, it’s a blast!)

At the end of the day, you’ll be happy, the kids will be happy, and you’ll create precious memories together. After all, they learn from us, and teaching them healthy habits is a win all around, don’t you think?

Let’s make this school year your healthiest yet! What are your favourite tips for resetting your routine?
